Living Roofs

ROOFSCAPES

SYMBIOS develops roof-planting schemes that emphasize bio-diversity. Roofscapes can benefit local wildlife whether incorporating native, non-native plant species or be a ‘hybrid’ blend of both. These ‘gardens in the sky,’ if properly design, will operate as functional ecological living systems.

image1. Succulent – Cacti
These extensive roof gardens can be composed of numerous varieties of succulent and cacti species.  A strong performer when it comes to low maintenance and water use.
- Soil depth can range from 2” to 4” (typically).

image2. Native – Biodiversity
These extensive roof gardens can be composed of native plant species and/or non-invasive naturalized species. A good ecological choice as many of the plants will benefit local pollinators from insects to birds. Requires medium maintenance. Water use varies with plant selection.
- Soil depth can range from 4” to 8”.

image3. Perennial – Herbaceous
These extensive to semi-intensive roof gardens can be composed of a variety of perennial plants, i.e. grasses or herbaceous plants, like sage or buckwheat. Many landscape looks can be developed with this type of planting palette. Requires medium maintenance. Water use varies with plant selection.
- Soil depth can range from 4” to 8” to 12”.

image4. Landscape Garden
These extensive to semi-intensive and intensive roof gardens are developed to integrate built features with the plantscape features. Many landscape designs can take place here, from pathways to patios, decks to arbors and even water features. Requires medium to high maintenance. Water use varies with plant selection.
- Soil depth can range from 4” to 8” to 12” to 16”.

image5. Food Garden
These semi-intensive and intensive roof gardens are developed for the purpose of growing food. These systems will require deeper planting depths and the soil medium needs to be supportive of food crops. Frequently we design these systems in combination with one or more of the other systems above. Requires medium to high maintenance. Soil depth can range from 4” to 8” to 12” to 16”.
