eco-tecture + design + build
Kevin Falkerson is founder and principle of SYMBIOS. He draws his inspiration from his study of living systems, his background in higher education, the process of art and architectural design.
Formally, he earned an associate degree in Environmental Science from Westchester College. He then studied Natural Sciences and received his B.S. degree in Ecology from Hampshire College.
Kevin earned a Master’s of Architecture degree from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI) upon the completion of a design for an ecological recreational structure & park for New York City.
In 1985, he founded Nu-Shelter Construction, a design-build company specializing in developing energy efficient solar homes in Massachusetts. It was, however, a stronger desire to integrate his trainings in Ecology, Energy Systems and Architecture that motivated Kevin to found SYMBIOS in the 1991. SYMBIOS is an ecological-based design company with an integrated design approach modeled on natural systems, green construction principles and sustainable technologies.
SYMBIOS is based in northern California and has developed many state-of-the-art environmental buildings and landscapes (Gallery). In 2004, SYMBIOS launched its Living Building Systems division, which designs and installs vegetative systems for roofs, outdoor facades & indoor walls.
Kerrie Lee Cole’s path has always been one associated with living plants. Initially trained in herbalism followed by horticultural studies and employment in the landscape industry, she naturally gravitated towards and focused on beneficial human-plant relationships.
She initially joined SYMBIOS in 2006 as a plant specialist to specify plants for a living roof project. She now heads-up our vegetative building division and has gained the accreditation of a GRP - Green Roof Professional. As part of the first inaugural class, she has achieved this status after passing the rigorous program developed by GRHC organization (Green Roofs for Healthy Cities).
