Rhizome House

Concrete, glass and steel set a dramatic stage for this expansive rooftop garden in coastal California.

A biodiverse pollinator friendly meadow blankets this flat roof extending outward like a terrace land form on a hillside. Gravel lined pathways meandered thru the roofscape that invites exploration.

The design focused on developing various co-mingling micro-environments from a pocket rocky succulent garden, a scattering of native bunch grass islands, to a hidden watery pool for thirsty pollinators and for birds to bathe.

The rooftop soil was inoculated with a mix of endomycorrhizae fungal species. Both the plants and fungi benefit from their symbiotic association!
